Summer brings lazy days at the beach, trips to the park and gives everyone the opportunity to exercise outdoors. Whether you’re a high-school athlete practicing twice a day, 5K newbie heading out on your morning run or looking to soaking up the sun, it’s important to know how to stay hydrated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 6,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses related to sports and exercise from 2001 to 2009. Dehydration is one reason for these visits, and it’s preventable. Moms can keep an eye on the intensity of their kids’ activities — from playing a game outdoors to two-a-day practices — and make sure fluids are readily available to drink.

People need to be mindful to drink fluids before, during and after spending time outside on hot summer days. When you’re thirsty, it’s a clear indication that you haven’t had enough to drink — and it’s time to drink more.

Many people are surprised to learn that milk — including white or chocolate milk — can help you hydrate after exercise, plus lowfat chocolate milk has the right protein to carb ratio to help you recover after a tough workout.  In fact, drinking lowfat or skim milk after exercise could restore and maintain hydration better than other popular post-exercise beverages, including water, according to one study. Researchers suggest it’s due to milk's electrolyte content and energy density.

When you think about how to stay hydrated this summer, reach for a glass of milk. It is one of the original hydration beverages — fresh and in your refrigerator for just about 25 cents a serving.
